‘Step aside World Dryer, there’s a new sheriff in town’ was the strident claim echoing in the catacombs of the Hemel Hempstead Holiday Inn function room, at the Sanitation News Summer Ball 2012. And despite the audacity of the taunt from fledgling dare-do-drys Deta Electrical, the infamous (CEO) of World Dryer, John ‘Hot Blows’ Lowden, was seen to move his hand self-reassuringly to his signature-look sheriff badge, while readjusting his stetson and chaps awkwardly in his seat.

Maybe there’s no real cause for concern, but as I took in the luxurious satin-chrome finish on Deta’s dangerously edgy new 1009CH design, I wouldn’t have wanted to be in old Hot Blows Lowden’s snake-skin/suede boots. Not in the least because he had eaten a bad scotch egg at the buffet and I could hear him in cubicle 5 feet away.

This cumbersome wretch lumbers forth like the gargantuan love child of James Dyson and his fridge. We all knew that Dyson’s mind-combusting-re-design of the dryer would be chased by tawdry pretenders such as this, and we were all right.

Hey, Cannon’s addition of a 0.8l drain tank for excess liquid, and the downright unfathomably low 650W power usage can not be trouser-wiped. But all the stat-chat on the blogosphere is just hot air when you consider this simple fact: it’s uglier than a used tube of Anusol.

1. The Airdri Classic

What a way to kick things off! It’s time the exhilarating world of hand dryer technology was thrust forward in to the gusting heat of the media. As an industry insider and budding hand-dryer-hobbyist, I intend to keep a Dryer Diary that offers you first hand information about the fascinating, and sometimes interesting world of what our French cousins call Les Beaux Bleauers.

So what a way to kick things off! Classic by name and nature, Airdri’s landmark compact blower is a comforting sight to the wet faced and/or handed. At the touch of a sultry, concave-curved button, she roars out at a fiery (non NSF approved) 50 degrees. One cannot but imagine the heavy breath from the somehow isolated nostril of Athena herself, as the steamy blast escapes the Airdri’s hand or face directable air passage at twenty two meters per second.
